Wine & Spirit Education Trust Courses
We are delighted to have successfully gained Approved Programme Provider status with the Wine and Spirit Education Trust. We can now deliver two of their wine appreciation courses at Level 1 and Level 2.
The WSET is a world-wide organisation that educates people to know more about wine grape varieties, wine production, how to store and serve wine. Victoria South our wine expert passed her WSET Educator qualification in 2018 and will lead the courses.
Level 1: A one-day delve into grape growing and winemaking so that you will know the types and styles of wines and how they should be stored and served.
Level 2: A three-day more in-depth study of the characteristics of wine, wine styles and quality and you’ll learn about different production methods, and how to store, select and serve wine.
Courses are held at the Hydro Hotel, Eastbourne and at the English Wine Centre, Alfriston.
This course is for you if you have little or no prior knowledge of wines. It is designed to provide a sound but simple introduction to wines. At the end of the course you will be able to identify the principal types and styles of wine. You will know the key characteristics of wines made from the principal grape varieties. You will also know the key principles involved in storage and service of wine.
The course takes place on one day and there is a 45 minute multiple choice exam at the end.
The course starts at 9.30am at the Hydro Hotel, Eastbourne and finishes at 5.30pm.

This course is for you if you have a general interest in wine and would like to know more. It is also suitable for those employed in the hospitality sector where a sound but simple level of product knowledge is required.
You will learn to interpret the labels of major wines of the world and give basic guidance on selection and service as well as understand the principles of wine tasting and evaluation.
You will learn about the factors that influence wine style. You will learn to describe the principal grape varieties used in still wine production. You will be able to describe the style and quality of wines made from important grape varieties in the key wine producing countries of the world.
You will learn to outline the production methods of sparkling wines and be able to describe the style from the key production countries of the world.
You will learn the methods used in the production of sweet and fortified wines and describe the style of these wines.
The Level 2 course is delivered over three separate days – one day a week for three weeks. There is a total of 17 hours in the classroom and a further 11 hours of personal study required which culminates in a one-hour exam.
Classes will start at 9.30am and finish at 4.30pm apart from the last day when the exam will add a further hour – with a finish at 5.30pm.
A light lunch will be available each day.
